2009 World of Speed record breaking races to begin...
Lucky takes charge as pit crew boss...
...and clears the cars of salt...
The Utah Salt Flats have been used as a speedway since 1914.
Anyone can race, as long as they meet all the required specifications. There are a number of different makes and models of cars from all over the country.
High speed race cars have achieved speeds in excess of 600 mph. It is extremely flat out here and it aligns almost perfectly with the earth. The salt runs approximately 6 feet deep.
Today, we have come to cheer on our friends, Allan, TJ and Mike J. as they reach for the 130 club.
As the racers take there mark, word of technically difficulties with the speed clock goes over the c.b. radios. Hurry up and wait...
Lucky is somewhat easy to entertain as we wait for hours in the extreme weather conditions. When he wasn't soaking up the shade and air conditioning in the Vibe...
...he shows off his hot rod's engine to anyone that will look and takes a spin in TJ's...
...poses with a giant trophy...
...takes a leak on his car's tire...
...and just hangs with the men...
Despite all the guy stuff, I think he still loves his mama...
Word that the equipment is fixed and ready to go comes late in the day with only couple hours of sunlight to spare...
The cars get take their mark...
A young girl with big balls runs a street luge. Her helmet reads,
"I was spanked by a chick"
Never heard what her speed was...
Mike J: '92 350Z71 Chevy Caprice
Top speed: 127.345
TJ: '87 Monte Carlo 350 with an '83 grill
Top speed: (will post later)
Allan: '71 350 Chevy C10
Top speed:
"Fastest speed in the standing mile on wet salt is 108.99407 MPH. This Year that is." ~Allan
They did what they set out to do.
I met a woman that was out supporting her husband. 2 years ago he had a heart attack. He is doing just fine now...
They are now working on fulfilling all of their life long dreams. One of his was to race on the Salt Flats.
