Bemidji & Lake Itasca, Minnesota

Lake Bemidji is said to be Paul Bunyan's birthplace
at least by their Chamber of Commerce.
It is one in six towns that stake this claim.
According to Chippewa legend...
Paul was so greedy, ripping down all the trees that Nanabojo, a Native American...
...stopped him by beating him to death with a big fish
after several weeks of fighting.
Minnesota Nice Café
or
 Minnesota Passive Aggressiveness Café???
Bemidji is the first city on the Mississippi River...
...and it begins right here in our very own backyard.
...but first a sneak peek at the pristine waters...
...and a stroll through the north woods...

 ...to Old Timers Cabin.
Resting the short stumps before the short journey back to camp.
...where my sweet family helped celebrate my 37 years on this earth...
 ...with fancy spinning flames...
 ...my favorite treats.
...and a mosquito night walk about the campgrounds...
Good Morning!
Happy Father's Day
Now, it's time to make like a baby and head... up.
Where life begins...
Lake Itasca
Headwaters of the Mississippi River
If only I could thank my Grandparents for always including me in on their camping trips. They fearlessly packed up their three oldest grandchildren and their pull behind camper and brought us on many a great adventures, including Itasca. I only have a few pictures and some faint memories.
They are very special to me.
It was my Grandma that taught me to travel without consequence.
Lucky, ready to take his first steps across the Mighty Mississippi...
...and Axel too...
Axel made it once across with a mom down.
It's slippery.
Lucky didn't stop there.
He crossed that river more times than he could count.
He was a man on a mission.
Axel spent his time wading in the current of the clear, crisp waters...
...and crossing the log bridge.
They would have stayed forever.
...but they got ice cream...
 ...and actually shared...
...but then Lucky hid behind the car to drink his root beer
that he only gets on special occasions, so Axel wouldn't see.
...before our last nature hike...
...through the ancient Indian burial grounds.
We spotted our Minnesota state flower.
The Lady Slipper
...but this it is not pink & white, so maybe it doesn't count.
 ...a big giant dragon fly...
Someday, my children will either love me or hate me for taking so many pictures
and airing every last detail of their family adventures like an obsessed fan.
For now, I am going with LOVE...
We are all tired and ready for home.
Somebody wanted to take a picture of all of us, so I let her...
...before we jumped into our fully loaded family truckster...
...and last but not least, our beautiful state bird...
THE LOON
TIME MACHINE:
One week earlier...
The boys took a walk over the St. Anthony Bridge
to see the raging river in action...
They learned all about how the river is used for industry at The Mill City Museum...
The Twin Cities still remains a big part in the milling industry.
They took a pretty cool grain elevator ride, learned how to make flour...
watched a demonstration on how this roof blew off..
...and got this pretty sweet view.
Who knew flour was so interesting!?! Really.
Bob was into it.
 They like it...
Okay, what next?
