Day 5
History Lesson:
If you have already seen the movie, you know how this ends.
If you have already seen the movie, you know how this ends.
At the US Navel Base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on the morning of December 7th, 1941 men aboard U.S. ships awoke to the sounds of alarms, bombs exploding, and gunfire, prompting bleary-eyed men into dressing as they ran to General Quarters stations. The famous message, "Air raid Pearl Harbor. This is not drill." was sent from the headquarters of Patrol Wing Two. The defenders were very unprepared as the Japenese flew in for the deadly attack...

This little lady sits diligently polishing a missle...
War is rad. Aweful proud of ya...
The USS Bowfin Submarine...
With much concern from Lucky we bored the little fairy boat that takes us over to the USS Arizona Memorial. He was worried that it, too would get bombed...
The wreckage of the battleship was not salvaged, and continues to lie at the floor of the harbor.
It is the site of a memorial to those who perished on that day.
1,177 died on the USS Arizona
A Pearl Harbor survior that fought the battle has the option to have his remains entered into the ship when he passes...
Lucky felt much sadness and had a hard time wrapping his head around the fact that "all those mens were still in that ship" and "why couldn't nobody get them out?"
and most important, "where is the treasure?"
He said he saw a soldier float by...
never underestimate the haunting super natural skills of a child...
They say that approximately 500,000 gallons of oil went down that day. The battleship ship sank in 12 minutes and burned for 2 1/2 days. After 49 years about 2 quarts of oil bubble out per day. They guess at this rate the oil will still bubble out for then next several 100s of years....
...it is an eerie sight...
President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed,
"December 7th, 1941 -
A date which will live in infamy"
(Mike thinks he is funny)
We got a kick out of the swarms of Japanese tourist visiting the site...
Enough of the heavy stuff,
we are in paradise already and it must be 5:00 somewhere...
...and we got this little Hunka Hunka Burning Love to entertain...
...a stroll down the main drag should do...
...maybe a little shopping...
...a moo moo, anyone???
We paid homage to the late great Duke Kahanamoku...
He was an Olympic champion winning three gold, two silver, and one bronze metal in four Olympics between 1912 and 1922.
It only took Lucky almost 4 years, but he finally got lei'd...
from a tiny little Asian man...
Mom, Lucky and the 4 month the old fetus
(Corndog Beast, as he or she has been affectionaly named by it's big brother),
together on Waikiki Beach...
Lucky was also a 4 month fetus froliking through Hawaii...
Day 6:
Another breakfast of champions...
...a quick attempt to squeeze a little life out of the lei...
...then a drive to the eastern windward side of the island.
A scenic view of the "other" side of Diamond Head...
Red Blankie is making his way around the world with Lucky.
A family photo opp...
everybody say CORNDOG BEAST!
...an unknown shrine over looks the ocean...
...and a whale watching overlook called "The Blow Hole".
The humpback whales come to this area to breed, they will then head north to Alaska to eat and back down to the southern waters of Hawaii to give birth in 11 months.
Many a great whale tails sightings. Amazing!
...continue our drive up the coast...
...and back to the hotel in time for a quick dip...
...before the sun goes down...
Day 6:
Mike being the great guy he is spent our last day on the island doing our laundry.
Lucky and I spent the day cleaning and organizing our stuff in the disaster of a room...
A much needed brake came in the form of lunch with Grave Digger...
...and a refreshing swim...
Belly Flop!
Mahalo, O'ahu...
